Few athletes have delivered a defining sports moment quite like Jack Hughes did at the 2026 Winter Olympics. When looking at the biggest moments in sports, the Golden Goal might be number one. It's bigger than the Seattle Seahawks winning the Super Bowl, even if the Sam Darnold story was a great one. It blows whoever wins the Stanley Cup out of the water. Right now, it's competing with the New York Knicks run to the NBA Finals as the most discussed sporting event of the year.
And there's a good reason for that. Hughes and Team USA ran through qualifying and the knockout round at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan, Italy. Hughes was relatively quiet until the gold medal game against Canada. This rivalry had been building since the 4 Nations Face-Off last year.
Not only did the Americans get a chance to face off with Canada in the first Olympics in more than a decade with NHL players, but the U.S. was trying to win its first gold medal since the Miracle on Ice in 1980. And just days prior to that, the U.S. Women beat Canada to win their own gold medal.
The Canada-United States game went into overtime, because of course it did. There, Hughes was not going to be denied. Despite getting smashed in the face by a stick, losing multiple teeth in the process, Hughes came back to become a hero.
He beat Jordan Binnington to put his name in the history books. The image that followed instantly became part of American hockey history: Hughes draped in an American flag, fist raised, bloodied, smiling, and missing two teeth as he celebrated the championship-winning goal. It became one of the great sports images of this era.

Jack Hughes is the only male hockey player on TIME's 100 Most Influential People in Sports list
The New Jersey Devils star has been named to the 2026 TIME 100 Most Influential People in Sports list, recognition that reflects his role in one of the most memorable moments in recent American sports history. Hughes will live his days and never again match that moment. He could win five more gold medals and 10 Stanley Cups, but scoring the Golden Goal to win the first gold in 46 years will never be matched.
He section of the list titled "Titans" alongside Victor Wembanyama, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Jaxon Smith-Njigba. TIME's author mentioned that Hughes "shined" after he was hit in the face with a stick by Sam Bennett.
Hughes has since fixed his teeth, but the image, and his legacy because of it, will last forever.
